Is kindness inborn or taught?

There is a saying, "Kindness is the language, the blind can see and the deaf can hear". But is kindness inborn or could it be taught and be cultivated. Out of curiosity I sent this question to some of my great friends to ponder. I'm sure bugging our mind can make us more intelligent.

Little darling said every human being is bonded with kindness until the environment & circumstances change oneself. Even a person has to be changed to be cruel & cunning. I believe if he has the will power to change the better, he can do it. It may be also due to impact on learning & situation as well. There is a will there is a way.

Sensation said inborn and up bringing plays a very importance part of life in kindness.

Headmaster Chen said the former is instinct, the latter is influenced.

Farijah said Kindness could be taught in many ways.

Wan said I always believe babies are as pure as a piece of clean clothe. It's all depends on how we nurture the children. Without bad influences, the children can't go wrong/unkind. But with bad influences, definitely they can be very unkind. Not much teaching to do in the aspect of kindness, but to practice it ourselves as our kids learn from observing us. My perception of inborn would be it is by his/her natural instinct. Taught would be to tell directly or reflect through our actions what is supposed to do and so on. As such, kindness could be taught.

Abd Rahim said Kindness is a noble value which everyone on earth is capable of choosing and doing, and can certainly be nurtured over the life time. Kindness is an outcome of one's behaviour whose consequences will impact others - so kindness is in the recipients' perception! Inborn kindness may have no intention to inflict pain onto others; taught kindness is influenced by deliberate motives and it's fulfillment.

Captain Azhar said human beings are born with both traits... good & the bad (kindness & indifference). I believe kindness can be inculcated through, say parental influence. Bugging our mind may not make us more intelligent but rather make it tick... tick... and ticking.

Thank you so much for the responses. Their pondering had enlightened me further to share the greatness of kindness in life.

My personal view - Inborn kindness is always pure in heart, while the taught kindness might have motives and influences. Both are good qualities of manner, but the one who is inborn with kindness is truly blessed.

The most touching quote -“Let no one ever come to you without leaving better and happier. Be the living expression of God's kindness: kindness in your face, kindness in your eyes, kindness in your smile.” - Mother Teresa quotes
