Don't be too smart when you need help....

A friend introduced me to a prospect who was interested to insure his expensive house. His telephone number was given, and before I could meet him, I thought it was nice to call him first.

On the phone, he wanted me to advise him what is the best recommendation and advice that I could provide. Before I could say a word, these remarks were thrown over the line on me. He said... He doesn't trust on insurance companies and insurance agents, they always make customers to pay unnecessary extra premium for coverage not needed. They always try to benefit more than their customers. Now please tell me what you could offer.

I was really irritated but I kept reminding myself to stay calm. Instead of offering my sincere informations and suggestions, I told him that I will send over by post the proposal form with some write up for him to read. Assuring him that full details will be attached. Without him realising he missed the best advices from a most professional agent in town. Reason... Because he thought he was smart and being smart myself too, he has to learn the hard way by himself. Why should I be degraded by someone who thought they know everything.

Moral of the story; If you need help, don't try to be too smart. Listen first to understand and then ask.

Food for thought - "A smart man makes a mistake, learns from it, and never makes that mistake again. But a wise man finds a smart man and learns from him how to avoid the mistake altogether" - Roy H Williams
